COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brian Wishneff, who secured key federal grants and investments to revive downtown, died Saturday at 73 after a long battle with Huntington’s disease. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Temple Emanuel Cemetery—a gathering will follow.  Cardinal News
  • Washington Park Pool in Roanoke will open Saturday, June 7 across from the Gainsboro YMCA on Orange Avenue. The new pool features a zero-entry area with splash features, a 14-foot water slide, three lap lanes and a lazy river and will be open every day except Mondays.  WSLS 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Roanoke police responded to a single-vehicle crash on the 1500 block of Golfside Ave at 8:26 p.m. on May 28 that left a man with serious injuries from a motorcycle crash hospitalized—investigators are still looking into the cause.  WFXR-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Two Roanoke men—Brandon Wayne Sawyers, 20, and Damitri Joshua Smith, 18—have been charged with robbery and shooting at a Vinton tobacco store where a clerk was shot and taken to a hospital, and both remain in custody without bond.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roanoke College announced today a partnership with TMEIC to launch the TMEIC Roanoke College Scholars program—offering $10,000 annual scholarships, paid summer internships, mentorships and career development for engineering science majors. The program will select its first two scholars this summer to build a local engineering workforce in southwest Virginia.  WSLS 10
  • Build Smart Institute will host its first Concrete Camp for high school students from July 21 through 25 at its training facility at 701 Gainsboro Road NW in Roanoke — the free program, offered in collaboration with ProCon Inc, teaches concrete work skills and limits enrollment to 15 participants.  The Roanoke Star

  • Roanoke is promoting driver safety today with its annual 'Focused Driving, Safe Arriving' campaign — local artists are invited to submit designs for signal boxes as reports show a 26% increase in distracted driving crashes from 2019 to 2023. The third annual 'Color Your Corner' art contest accepts entries until June 11.  ABC 13
