CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Herman Estes was sentenced to seven years in prison last week for fraud after he used a fake cashier's check+ to buy a $1.3 million home in Old Mill Plantation, using forged IRS documents and false papers to support his claim of an $18.3 million refund. Roanoke.com
- ➤ Virginia State Police said troopers are searching for a suspect in Bedford County after a hit-and-run on Saturday left a cyclist dead on the 3900 block of Nemmo Road at about 1:30 p.m.—the suspect’s silver/gray pickup truck pulling a small black utility trailer showed damage to the driver’s side mirror, front left headlight and front left fender, and he is believed to be a Hispanic or possibly Indian male aged 30 to 40 with short, dark curly hair. - ➤ Roanoke Police say a man died after a shooting on the 2900 block of Glengary Avenue NW after 11 p.m. Saturday night—no arrests have been made. WFXR-TV

- ➤ The 56th Roanoke Festival in the Park brought music, fun and food to local families on Memorial Day weekend. Headlining bands LANCO, 1964 The Tribute and lovelytheband performed along with local daytime shows—also featuring a street festival with bouncy houses, food trucks and scholarship opportunities— as festival organizers noted a trend toward younger vendors and attendees.
