COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roanoke residents known as plawkers gather several days a week to walk along local streets—such as Melrose Avenue—and pick up trash and socks that spark a friendly challenge. Leader Sunni Purviance said their efforts help reduce litter and earned them the Neighborhood Improvement Award in 2021.  WVTF
  • Total Action for Progress and This Valley Works are partnering—hosting the No CAP Teen Summit on May 31 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Dumas Center in Roanoke so middle and high school students can speak with community influencers and learn to drive change.  WDBJ7

  • After 40 years in business, Roanoke's Patina Bridal and Formals is closing its doors as it begins winding down operations, and sales will continue until it officially closes — marking the end of a longtime local destination for formal and prom wear.  WSLS 10

  • Kirk Family YMCA is preparing for a busy summer camp that will offer fun activities and learning sessions for children this summer—local families can soon sign up for programs planned to attract many kids.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roanoke will test a three-lane road diet on Williamson Road this fall for six months to see if the new setup can improve safety after nearly 300 crashes in the past five years. The project will run from Compton Street Northeast near Orange Avenue to Angell Avenue Northwest (close to the Williamson Road branch library) as city officials work to reduce traffic risks despite mixed local reactions.  The Roanoke Times
  • Roanoke County will launch its new website redesign today. Visitors will see a streamlined home page and updated library and Economic Development pages—helping them access services and events with ease.  Roanoke County
  • The Virginia Department of Transportation is asking Roanoke residents for input on a safety study for Route 460, focusing on roadway and pedestrian conditions along Melrose/Orange Avenue between Lafayette Boulevard and Gainsboro Road/Burrell Street—feedback will help shape future transportation improvements.   • The Virginia Department of Transportation is asking residents and travelers to share feedback on four roadway studies aimed at improving safety, traffic flow and multimodal access in Botetourt County, Roanoke, Blacksburg — and Radford. The online surveys remain open until June 2.  WSLS 10
