  • On Armed Forces Day, the National D-Day Memorial held a 'Pack the Convoy' event to gather food, toiletries, and essential supplies for service members overseas—local groups and a North Carolina community college donated about 200 pounds of items while the National Guard aided in distribution.  ABC 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Walmart reopened its remodeled Neighborhood Market at 2141 Dale Avenue SE today with upgrades that include a brighter layout, a larger deli, enhanced pharmacy services and improved online grocery pickup. The ribbon-cutting ceremony featured the unveiling of a new local mural and the distribution of $4,500 in grants to nonprofits—supporting groups like Good Samaritan Hospice and Roanoke Valley SPCA.  The Roanoke Star

CRIME NEWS

  • Kerri Magness, a 36-year-old woman, was last seen leaving her family’s home on Bee Hollow Road at 11:45 a.m. Saturday for a jog—she has not returned and her vehicle remains at her parents’ home with authorities asking anyone with information to call the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roanoke County Public Schools earned its first Stormwater Clean Award for excellent work on the upcoming Career and Technical Education Center at 6251 Peters Creek Road—where a team including Branch and Joe Bandy and Sons controlled dust and sediment on the 23-acre site despite heavy winds and rain.  The Roanoke Star
  • Today, the Roanoke City Council will review a plan that gives city employees a 3% cost-of-living raise and hold hearings on a proposed tax for blighted and derelict properties. The council will also consider a reallocation of $17,874,219 for school capital projects — sessions will be held at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building.  Cardinal News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Five new bike trails—ranging from beginner to downhill—will open in early July on Mill Mountain, adding about 4 miles of routes and increasing trail mileage by 30%. The Roanoke Parks Foundation led the project and has raised $345,784 as the city works with professional contractors to improve connectivity and safety for bikers.  Cardinal News
  • Salem’s Kathryn Ha, a Vanderbilt commit, won the girl’s 15 to 18 division at the Scott Robertson Memorial Golf Tournament by finishing seven under par — four strokes ahead of Elieen Park — making her the first local winner in the division since 1992. She competed while attending her senior prom Saturday night and said she felt honored by the pressure as a privilege.  WDBJ7
