COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, groups of Black men walk the Greenway to discuss health challenges and share support as they work on both physical and emotional well-being—helping each other build a healthier future. They are also changing diets and increasing exercise to pass on better wellness habits to younger community members.  The Roanoke Tribune
  • After severe weather on Friday, Appalachian Power began working to restore power to more than 30,000 customers affected by outages — with 2,800 workers from nearby states assessing damage and repairs. With pleasant weather today, the company expects most areas to have power back by Sunday evening — ensuring residents are reconnected.  WSLS 10
  • Bank of Botetourt opened its new full-service branch at Melrose Plaza on May 9 in northwest Roanoke. Local leaders including the CEO of the Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce and mayor Joe Cobb attended the ribbon cutting—marking a community investment with financial advisory services and 24/7 ATM access now available.  The Roanoke Tribune
  • Niyah Ellington runs Niy Ells Honeycomb Hideout where she makes creative cakes and sweets—she was born at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and grew up in Star City, starting her business at 15 with family support. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews responded to a blaze in the 3700 block of Southway Drive — near Tanglewood Mall in south Roanoke — and contained the fire, officials said.  WSLS 10
  • On Saturday morning, an apartment fire on the 3700 block of Southway Drive SW left two people hospitalized and displaced about 18 residents—firefighters worked for an hour and a half to extinguish heavy flames and saved two cats while one was lost.  ABC 13

  • Roanoke police are asking for help finding 14-year-old Ty’ree Deyjonn Antell Mallory, who was last seen leaving a home on the 2000 block of Laura Rd NW wearing white shorts; anyone with information should call 540-344-8500.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the 34th Annual Local Colors Festival in downtown Roanoke featured live acts on the main stage at Elmwood Park and booths that showed food, music, and traditions from over 60 countries—City Arts and Culture Coordinator Douglas Jackson said the event shows how the city welcomes everyone.  WSLS 10

  • Kathryn Ha, a Salem Spartan and Vanderbilt commit, finished the Scott Robertson Tournament's second round five under par and five strokes ahead of her nearest rival on a windy day. She said her performance marks her best showing in the tournament so far as she prepares for tomorrow’s round.  WDBJ7
