ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two people died when a Volvo tractor-trailer stopped on I-91 at the 166-mile marker in Botetourt County due to a mechanical issue — a Mercedes hit it from behind, killing 22-year-old Sameer Mirza and 15-year-old Mustafa Mirza while leaving the Mercedes driver with non-life-threatening injuries.  WSLS 10
  • Fire crews responded Friday morning to a structure fire at Westlake Golf and Country Club - mutual aid support came from Stewartsville-Chamblissburg, Moneta, Hardy, and Smith Mountain Lake Marine teams.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • A live show celebrating the 20th anniversary of 'Napoleon Dynamite' will take place at Berglund Center on May 24th and it will include Q & A sessions, scene re-creations, prize giveaways and interactive games for fans.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Donald Tinsley, 51, and his son Brandon Williams, 31, graduated together from the respiratory therapy program at Radford University Carilion in Roanoke as both earned honors for their work caring for patients. Tinsley said the graduation was a proud moment (reflecting years of hard work) and that their journey began during the COVID-19 crisis (inspired by his mother's work as a VA nurse).  WDBJ7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • City crews are replacing old storm pipes—installing a nearly $2.7 million system upgrade—to reduce flooding on downtown streets like Campbell, Salem and First. The work will finish this fall as additional projects are planned to further improve stormwater flow.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jason Martin, owner of several downtown eateries, has urged Roanoke City Council to support local independent restaurants as the newly approved meals tax increase will soon affect business operations (his open letter calls for reinvestment).  WFIR News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local pro angler Martin Villa (a Crozet stone mason and former fly fisherman) will compete today at Smith Mountain Lake in the Major League Fishing B&W Trailer Hitches Heavy Hitters event presented by Bass Pro Shops with 30 pros vying for a top prize of $100,000. Villa said forward-facing sonar and the lake’s excellent water quality will offer a fresh challenge for all competitors.  Roanoke.com
