COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ New Freedom Farm in Botetourt County announced on May 12 that it will close on July 31 as founder Lois McGill retires—ending nearly nine years of service that helped veterans and EMS recover from PTSD through animal-assisted bonds. The board said it will support veterans with referrals and ensure each animal in its care receives continued compassion during the transition. WFXR-TV

- ➤ Roanoke Police confirmed that K’ymir Pannell (9-year-old boy) was found safe late Wednesday morning after he disappeared from the 1500 block of Burrell Street NW at approximately 9:45 a.m. on May 14, and the department thanked the public for their help. WFIR News
- ➤ Roanoke police said 16-year-old Vanessa Mejia Dameron, who left Patrick Henry High School on May 14 at 8:55 a.m., has been found safe — officers thanked locals for sharing the missing person alert. WFIR News

- ➤ Hidden Valley senior Ann Elise Kadela was awarded a $2K WSLS scholarship for her work in academics, sports, and community service — her award supports her plans to attend Virginia Tech while continuing to lead in school and community activities. WSLS 10

- ➤ Today, law enforcement agencies are holding memorial services to honor fallen officers on Peace Officers Memorial Day; events include a 10 a.m. wreath-laying at the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office (Deputy Jason Saunders Memorial Garden) and a 4 p.m. service at St. John Lutheran Church (Brambleton Avenue) in Roanoke. - ➤ On Wednesday, Roanoke officials gathered in Wasena Park to kick off construction for the Wasena Skatepark and the In-River Park—projects aimed at enhancing recreation and river access. The skatepark will be finished by year’s end while in-river park construction begins next month and finishes by mid-2026. WDBJ7
