COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Stan R. Hale and his family keep the legacy of The Roanoke Tribune alive as the Black newspaper celebrates 87 years of community journalism; the institution, founded in 1939, honors local history and connects diverse voices in our city.  The Roanoke Rambler
  • The Hospitality House project has advanced as the nonprofit acquired a three-story building in south Roanoke near the Carilion campus and received donation support from Carilion Medical Center—efforts will continue to raise over $6 million to complete the project.  WSLS 10
  • Camden Thepsimuong’s family is launching a scholarship fund that will cover camp fees for two children each year, honoring the teen’s love for his church camp. They plan to raise donations over the next decade to keep his legacy alive (a tribute to community spirit).  WSLS 10

  • A local business is gearing up to host America’s Wildest Automotive Festival in Roanoke, where hundreds of local vendors + car enthusiasts are set to enjoy unique experiences. The event will showcase a variety of shopping and car culture elements and is scheduled to take place soon.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Mayor David Bowers & former Councilwoman Stephanie Moon Reynolds are running for City Council in Roanoke, setting up a competitive race. Roanoke City Public Schools are considering cuts to transport & after-school programs as rising gas prices spark fuel-saving tips, and the Roanoke Tribune marks its 87th anniversary.  The Roanoke Rambler
  • City permits are delayed as the Planning, Building and Development Department, short 20 staff, slows approvals for projects that once took three weeks but now take months. Officials hired a consultant to review the process and will add temporary staff while streamlining permit reviews (contract runs until June).  Cardinal News
  • Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones said new FDA vape rules that expand the approved product directory will support the state law designed to restrict youth access to vaping products. The law goes into effect July 1, and his office will work with the Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) Authority on enforcement.  WVTF

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gage from Amherst County beat a rare brain tumor after St. Jude treated him since he was 3; now at 22 he takes part in the 2026 Dream Home Campaign to raise awareness about the charity’s care.  ABC 13
  • Dr. Badgett explained that claims linking cortisol to weight gain and adrenal fatigue are too simple, and that tests (saliva, urine, dexamethasone suppression) help check hormone levels. He stressed that cortisol is only one part of the body’s complex process.  WSLS 10
  • Officials at Smith Mountain Lake reported today that water levels are 5 to 6 feet below normal, exposing hazards – such as rocks and stumps – that may endanger boaters, swimmers and anglers. The lake association advises slowing down and ensuring everyone wears a proper life jacket.  WSLS 10
