- ➤ Downtown Roanoke will bring back the Member One Mega Market Match program starting May 31 to give SNAP users a dollar-for-dollar match up to $100 at the Historic City Market. Shoppers can also fill out a financial health survey to win $100 in Market Bucks (drawings will be held on July 12, August 16, and September 20) from local vendors. WSLS 10
- ➤ A 12-year-old student at Andrew Lewis Middle School organized a toy drive that collected 800 toys and games from a Dawgs game in late March. Carilion Children’s Hospital welcomed mascots Daisy from the Rail Yard Dawgs and Mugsy from the Salem Red Sox this morning—marking the drive's success—by accepting the donations. WFIR News
- ➤ Roanoke will host the Local Colors Festival on Saturday, May 17 at Elmwood Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring performances, artisan booths, activities for kids and worldwide cuisine that mark over 30 years of growth+ a celebration of the Valley's cultural diversity. WSLS 10

- ➤ Gov. Youngkin today announced that QualiChem will invest 9 million dollars in a new 48550 square foot facility in Salem—The expansion will create 12 jobs and move the company’s administrative offices and laboratory into a dedicated building to support more production. WSLS 10
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A state census from 1783 in parts of Augusta County showed that one in three homes owned at least one enslaved Black person, showing that slavery was more common than many believed — a detail used in a three-year project on Virginia’s role in the march to independence with support from the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission. - ➤ Roanoke County Economic Development Director Megan Baker was named one of North America’s top 50 economic developers by Consultant Connect. Since taking the role in October 2022, she led efforts that secured $144 million in new projects and created 1,300 jobs — including investments from Wells Fargo, Mack Trucks, Southern Team Hyundai, and Vistar Eye Center.
