- ➤ The Roanoke County Police Department and Performance Pickleball will host the first 'Pickleball with Police' event on Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Garst Mill Park pickleball courts — community members are invited to meet local officers and learn free pickleball skills during this outreach event. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Average gasoline prices in Roanoke fell 4.5 cents per gallon to $2.88 today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 155 stations. Prices are 8.1 cents lower than last month and 49.2 cents lower than a year ago — the drop comes as refineries finish seasonal maintenance and plan to boost output despite higher oil prices. WDBJ7
- ➤ The Virginia Verified Beef logo that shows beef raised and processed in Virginia was unveiled at the Virginia Beef Expo. Brandon Reeves of the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association said the new label will launch this summer—aiming to help local producers and boost the economy. WDBJ7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Glenn Youngkin signed a bill adding geothermal energy to the state’s renewable portfolio standards — the bill, introduced by Senator Jeremy McPike, will boost geothermal exploration in Southwest Virginia — and it will take effect this summer. WVTF
- ➤ Roanoke City Council approved its new budget today that keeps school funding the same and raises the meals tax from 5.5% to 6.5% starting July 1—revenue from the increase will pay for extra overtime and fix past maintenance issues.
