CRIME NEWS

  • Roanoke police arrested Thomas Dewayne Delp on a second-degree murder charge—he is accused of a shooting that occurred Friday.  Roanoke.com

  • Scott Dreyer wrote a reflective piece about the 80th anniversary of VE Day on May 8 and recalled meeting his longtime friend Claude, who is 85 and recently had a stroke—his story reminds readers to thank those who fought for our freedoms.  The Roanoke Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech Student Affairs hosted the final Aspire! Awards ceremony of the 2024-25 academic year, recognizing students and staff who showed service, leadership and growth — the awards honor those who live by the university's motto. Nominations for the 2025-26 Aspire! Awards are now open to identify individuals who inspire positive change through education and community involvement.  The Roanoke Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Roanoke City Council will vote on a budget proposal exceeding $403 million that affects schools (which face a $9 million shortfall), public safety and the meals tax (expected to increase from 5.5% to 7%). The proposal also includes a 3% merit increase for city workers and salary adjustments, and full documents will be posted online next month.  WSLS 10
  • Today, the Salem City Council will consider the first adoption of the FY26 budget, which includes a 2-cent decrease in the real estate tax rate to $1.18 per $100, increased school funding, and a planned 4% pay raise for eligible employees — all after public hearings on the tax and overall budget. The council will also review public input at a 6:30 p.m. City Hall meeting to consider ABoone Real Estate’s request to rezone 19 acres on Mill Lane and Penley Blvd for a new single-family home community — new homes are expected to be priced in the mid- to upper-$400,000 range.  Cardinal News
  • Governor Glenn Youngkin announced today the expansion of the Virginia Permit Transparency website to include the Virginia State Police and Virginia Department of Social Services—providing the public with easier access to track over 200 permit types and more than 100,000 applications processed annually. The change is expected to boost efficiency in state permitting processes.  The Roanoke Star
