  • Roanoke-area gas prices have risen as AAA reported that regular gas averaged $4.23 per gallon—up 19 cents over the past week as of Friday, May 8. Shoppers can find a lower price of $3.93 per gallon at the Walmart on Dale Avenue.  WSLS 10

  • Virginia Western Community College earned Military Friendly Gold status for 2026–27, which recognizes its expanded support for military-affiliated students. The award highlights the school's commitment to local veterans.  The Roanoke Times

  • Due to drought, Appalachian Power is releasing less water from the dam system as water levels drop in Smith Mountain Lake, and local officials report more boaters running aground. The change was implemented today amid worsening conditions on the lake.  Roanoke.com
