COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Roanoke is busy with the Street Performer Expo where local buskers perform alongside a Guinness World Record unicyclist and an America’s Got Talent semi-finalist breakdancer. The festival began May 9 and will continue through May 11 — shows are held along Kirk Ave and side streets from 1st to Campbell and Church Avenues — with a satellite area at Henrietta Lacks park.  WSLS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • Roanoke police responded at 4:09 a.m. Friday when they found a man shot to death in a parking lot on Jamison Avenue Southeast—no arrests have been made while the investigation continues.  WFIR News
  • Police responded around 4:10 a.m. on May 9 to a Dollar General at 13th and Jamison Ave. SE after a man was found dead—he was identified as a white male aged 35 to 45 and police are seeking a suspect in what is being treated as a homicide.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • People in Fincastle found rubble from the old historic courthouse after Botetourt County began a full rebuild due to mold, leaks, and ADA issues—eliminating a replica that replaced the 1848 courthouse that burned in 1970. The new courthouse will use salvaged artifacts to maintain its historic look with a modern interior and will be completed in July 2027.  WSLS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Friday, the Local Office on Aging held a senior health fair at Valley View Mall in Roanoke where seniors met with representatives from over 20 organizations offering healthcare, free screenings, and fall prevention programs—plus free massages and balance checks. LOA President Ron Boyd said the event, part of Older Americans Month, was designed to help seniors stay active and connected.  WDBJ7
  • The state approved Carilion’s new kidney transplant program in Roanoke — the program will reduce long drives for patients who currently have to travel hours to UVa or Wake Forest medical centers.  Roanoke.com
  • May is Mental Health Awareness Month in Roanoke, and local blogger Caitlyn Scaggs says that making healthy connections—where people feel safe and balanced—can help families, friends, and coworkers support one another through life's ups and downs.  WDBJ7
