COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roanoke County leaders announced new development projects—targeting housing and business growth—that are set to move forward soon. Officials said additional details on project timelines and locations will be shared in the coming weeks.  WDBJ7
  • Intercept Health will host a free Foster Care Aware event at its Roanoke headquarters on Saturday, May 10th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—offering family fun like a foam party, bounce house, and food trucks to help raise support for over 5,000 children in foster care statewide.  The Roanoke Star
  • Downtown Roanoke, Inc. will turn the 2nd Street Bridge at the Gainsboro Road NW, Salem Avenue SW and 2nd Street SW intersection into an 800‑foot waterslide to raise funds for its Ambassador Program this summer. The slide will run on June 28 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on June 29 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. — tickets include tube rental and two hours of unlimited sliding.  The Roanoke Star

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Roanoke police said a woman aged 79 (Kathleen Diane Witt) had a medical emergency that led her to drive on the wrong side of the road and collide head-on with another vehicle on Peters Creek Road NW around 4:10 p.m. on Friday, killing her and injuring two others who were taken to a local hospital.  ABC 13

  • Roanoke celebrated National Small Business Week this week when it hosted its first small business recognition reception Monday night at Sidewinders — dozens of local business owners met with the city's economic development team. Mayor Joe Cobb plans to host more events for small businesses in the fall.  WSLS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • Roanoke Police responded to a fatal two-vehicle collision on Peters Creek Road NW on May 2 at 4:10 p.m.—the crash killed 79-year-old Kathleen Diane Witt and injured two women who were taken to a local hospital, with early reports indicating that Witt may have suffered a medical emergency before the crash.  WFIR News

  • Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism will host the Tavern Stage Summer Music Series this summer at Explore Park in Twin Creeks. The series features five free events—May 9 with GAK, June 13 with Father Sun, July 18 with Empty Bottles, August 15 with Creedence Clearwater Recital, and September 12 with Jordan Harman and the Humble Brags—and food and drinks available for purchase at Twin Creeks Brewpub.  Roanoke County
