- ➤ Virginia Tech students, faculty, and community members will join the Out of the Darkness Walk today at 12:30 p.m. on the Drillfield to support suicide prevention and increase mental health awareness. WSLS 10
- ➤ The Junior League of Roanoke Valley hosted the Amplify Women – Voices in Community Leadership conference Saturday to highlight volunteerism and service leadership. Mayor Joe Cobb, City Manager Valmarie Turner and nonprofit panelists from Ronald McDonald House, Blue Ridge Literacy and Huddle Up Moms spoke to encourage local women to get involved. WSLS 10
- ➤ Twelve oak trees were planted in Horton and Perry Parks to honor victims of gun violence as part of the Planting Peace project led by the Roanoke Gun Violence Prevention Commission—one tree is dedicated to Thomas Hairston, who died after a shooting in February. The trees are meant to stand for 150 years and more will be dedicated to families throughout the summer—providing a lasting symbol of remembrance and hope. WDBJ7

- ➤ Engineering professor Shane Ross has been named the new Roanoke Electric Steel Chair at Virginia Tech and Radford University named Rachel Marie-Crane Williams dean for visual and performing arts effective July 10. The city appointed Jillian Papa as director of Planning, Building, and Development — local legal professionals Jeremy E. Carroll, Robert A. Ziogas and Roy V. Creasy received statewide honors while Mary Ann Steger Conrad earned the Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. Roanoke.com
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Three people were injured in downtown Roanoke when a shooting occurred just before 1 a.m. Saturday (at the 200 block of Market St. SE) and officers later found evidence in a parking lot, though no victims were there when they arrived; all three went to an area hospital and are expected to recover. - ➤ Timothy Bryant, a wanted suspect, was arrested yesterday after a chase in Roanoke led to police K9 Knox's death during an April 18 pursuit of a stolen vehicle and a subsequent manhunt near Morgans Mill Road. WDBJ7
- ➤ Police responded early Saturday morning near Market Street in downtown Roanoke after a viewer reported a frantic scene at 1:00 a.m. with people running as police tape blocked off the area from the parking lot of 202 Social House + Corned Beef Co and no serious injuries were reported. WSLS 10
