  • American Airlines announced a new nonstop flight from Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport to Chicago O’Hare that will begin on August 6 using a dual-class Embraer 175—tickets will be available starting May 5 on aa.com or through American’s mobile app.  WDBJ7
  • After more than seven months since Helene flooded its building, New River Junction has cleaned up and reopened for tubing and camping. Manager Jake Mondy said employees saved most of their inventory—community support will be key to covering rebuilding costs this summer.  WSLS 10

  • 5PTS Outdoors launched a summer concert series that will run throughout the season—organizers announced the plans on May 2.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roanoke College became the 200th college to join Bee Campus USA this spring as senior environmental studies students led the certification process using a student-led approach. This effort made the campus a friendly place for pollinators.  WFIR News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three Virginia State Police troopers and two Ballad Health nurses were honored for their heroic rescue of over 40 patients stranded on a Tennessee hospital roof during Hurricane Helene in September. Med Flight 2 helicopters from Abingdon aided the four-hour rescue operation — state and hospital teams coordinated efforts to safely transport patients — earning the Mutual Aid State Award.  WSLS 10
