COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local recreational facilities will hire more lifeguards as the busy summer season nears—YMCA and PLAY Roanoke offer training and jobs for those wanting outdoor work while keeping kids safe. The roles pay $15 an hour and include opportunities to learn lifesaving skills for future use.  WFXR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Digital media expert Erin Walsh—a mom and co-founder of Spark & Stitch Institute—advised parents to protect sleep, play, and outdoor time over rigid screen time limits in her new book It’s Their World: Teens, Screens, and the Science of Adolescence.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke College hosted the local round of the National Civics Bee on April 17th where middle school students competed to showcase their civic knowledge — Senator Mark Warner offered remarks and top winners will advance to the state competition on June 7th.  The Roanoke Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local pastor received a kidney transplant at UVA Hospital after a local nurse felt called to donate her kidney—her donation ended his dialysis treatment and took place on June 13, 2024. He now shares a renewed purpose in his ministry as both remain connected by a deep spiritual and physical bond.  WSLS 10
  • Construction has begun on the six-story, $100M Carilion Taubman Cancer Center, a project that will expand cancer treatment and bring new research and specialist care to Southwest Virginia. The center is set to open in fall 2027 — project leaders say it will offer cutting-edge equipment and collaboration with partners like Virginia Tech.  WSLS 10
