COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Arbor Day Foundation named Roanoke a 2024 Tree City USA because the city met key standards such as having a tree board, a tree ordinance, and proper spending on urban forestry—rules that support lasting community benefits.  WSLS 10
  • Claytor Lake reopened for the season after months of cleanup following Hurricane Helene, with officials confirming safe water and removal of over 4,000 tons of wood debris—making the lake ready for boaters, swimmers, and anglers. An Earth Day shoreline clean-up event is scheduled for today from 4pm to 5pm.  WDBJ7
  • The 70th Annual Vinton Dogwood Festival kicked off Friday night in downtown Vinton with a Journey tribute band that drew crowds for live music and food. Today the festival will feature 200 craft and retail vendors, three entertainment stages, a free kids zone, and a Dogwood Stroll parade at 2 p.m.—highlighting the community celebration of spring.  WSLS 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Thursday a fire displaced residents from a home on the 1800 block of Westview Avenue SW—firefighters arrived at 7:52 a.m. and contained the accidental blaze by 8:09 a.m. with no injuries reported.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Forensic psychologist Rachel Toles launches The Psychology of a Murderer tour — where she discusses high-profile crimes like the Menendez Brothers, Columbine shooting, and Chris Watts case — and the tour will stop at The Harvester in Rocky Mount in May.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roanoke DMV is hosting a Real ID session today from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. by appointment only—residents should act quickly since travelers will need an upgraded driver’s license to fly starting May 7.  WFXR-TV
