Good morning, Roanoke. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 24th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A special program called Vietnam War: Lost Generation will air Friday at 7 p.m. on CW Virginia—featuring Vietnam War veterans facing ongoing trauma and Vietnamese children evacuated to the U.S. who still feel the effects of war.  WFXR-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An employee at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant was treated at a hospital after a weak nitric acid spill on April 22 and released on April 23 while employees sheltered in place (600 gallons were neutralized) to keep the area safe (production and the river were not affected).  WDBJ7
  • On April 20 at 9:00 p.m., a Virginia State Trooper and a driver jumped over a guardrail on Route 220 in Henry County after a 2013 Toyota Highlander struck the patrol car while the trooper assisted a disabled motorist; both sustained minor injuries and 58-year-old William Likins from Oakland was taken to a nearby hospital and charged with reckless driving.  ABC 13
  • Brenda Bowman, a crossing guard near Fairview Elementary, was injured when a speeding driver ran over her foot five weeks ago and she now calls for cameras—she wants officer help and stricter enforcement of the 15 mph limit to keep children safe.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roanoke school board members were troubled by rumors that the city might take the schools' $12.8 million rainy day fund to cover an $18.8 million shortfall, and they discussed the issue at a Tuesday meeting. Superintendent White said the board proposed using the fund for one year—though some fear it could hurt future finances—and more talks between the board and city council are planned.  The Roanoke Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Supercell thunderstorms are long-lived storms with a rotating updraft that meteorologists track using radar to see their spin — these cells can produce very large hail and sometimes tornadoes. Although they are uncommon in our area, a veering wind profile or shifting wind speeds can create conditions for brief supercell features that may bring extra risks during heavy storms.  Cardinal News
