  • Parkside Picks will return to Green Hill Park on Saturday, May 3 from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM with over 60 vendors offering vintage finds, collectibles, handmade crafts and household goods plus vendor spaces are available through April 28.  The Roanoke Star
  • CHIP of the Roanoke Valley completed renovations to its headquarters at the corner of Third Street and Albemarle Avenue Southwest after a Tuesday morning ribbon-cutting ceremony. The nonprofit updated its lobby, conference room, and basement resource center—streamlining services for diverse families in the community.  WFIR News

  • The Roanoke Police Department is searching for 17-year-old teen mother Corsica Calin and her daughters—Iona, 17-month-old, and Maria, 5-month-old—who were last seen Tuesday at 6:26 a.m. in the 4500 block of Pennsylvania Ave and asks anyone with information to call 540-344-8500.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Professor Shane Ross from Virginia Tech has been named the new Roanoke Electric Steel Chair in Engineering, a role established with gifts from Roanoke Steel Corporation in 1976.  The Roanoke Star
  • On Saturday, April 26, 2025, Hollins University will co-host the Virginia Blue Ridge Girls on the Run Spring 5K for about 300 to 400 girls in grades three to five along with coaches and family members from across the Roanoke Valley, including first-time participants from Roanoke City Public Schools. The event will have volunteer check-in at 6:30 a.m., pre-race activities at 8:15 a.m., and a 5K race starting at 9:30 a.m.—campus road closures will last until the race ends around 11 a.m.  The Roanoke Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roanoke residents attended Monday night public hearings, filling an overflow room to share views on a proposed city budget, a possible meals tax increase and a potential real estate tax raise—local speakers warned that cuts could harm schools and local restaurants. The council will adopt the budget on May 12—comments reflected concern over rising costs and fiscal challenges.  WFXR-TV
  • City Council faces two major decisions — whether to use over $27 million in the school division’s rainy day funds to keep the budget at $106 million and whether to raise the meals tax, an increase that local restaurant owners oppose. School officials warn that cutting into reserves could force staffing cuts, and the council is set to vote on the budget on May 12.  The Roanoke Rambler
