COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Angels of Assisi is hosting an adoption event to help find homes for kittens as kitten season nears; Ethan Claridge, Director of Adoptions, explains the event will allow the shelter to reduce stray cats while joining GIVE Roanoke + more details are provided in the flyer.  WDBJ7
  • Council of Community Services is hosting Give Roanoke, a 24—hour fundraiser beginning at midnight with early donations underway to support nearly 100 local nonprofits. Blue Ridge Literacy aims to raise $4,000 for citizenship classes while Downtown Roanoke, Inc. seeks up to $5,000 for beautification and ambassador programs that help keep our downtown welcoming.  WSLS 10

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Volvo will lay off between 250 and 350 workers at its New River Valley plant in Dublin by June 27 due to weak heavy-duty truck orders — the cuts will also affect plants in Pennsylvania and Maryland.  Cardinal News

CRIME NEWS

  • Roanoke County Police are asking for help to locate 53-year-old Richard Peter Classey, a man from Catawba who texted his family on April 9 saying he would visit soon before his phone was turned off, with his family later finding his home unlocked on April 19, his car inside, and his wallet missing—he is described as 5′10″, 195 pounds with brown hair, blue eyes, and a motorcycle accident scar, and anyone with information should call Detective Myers at 540-777-5272.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke County Police are asking for help finding 53-year-old Richard Peter Classey from Catawba, a man with brown hair, blue eyes, and a scar from a past motorcycle accident who was reported missing from his local area.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Roanoke City Council heard from citizens about proposed tax increases; the meals tax, which is now 5.5%, might rise by 1—1.5% while the property tax could climb by 7.5%. A petition against the meals tax change has already gathered over 2000 signatures from residents and restaurant owners.  WSLS 10
  • VDOT is promoting safe driving during National Work Zone Awareness Week from April 21 to April 25 (theme: Respect the zone, so we all get home) to remind drivers to slow down, eliminate distractions, and follow Virginia’s phone down and move over laws near work zones.  WSLS 10

  • Area dentists urge local residents to stop using tobacco, nicotine vapes and smokeless products during Oral Cancer Awareness Month to help lower cases of mouth and throat cancer—early detection makes these cancers treatable.  WFIR News
