COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roanoke-based PedalSafe ROA will host four events in May for National Bike Month — including Reels and Wheels on May 15 at Golden Cactus Brewing, the Bike to Work Day Celebration on May 16 at Henrietta Lacks Plaza, the Ride of Silence on May 21 at Market Square, and Bike to the Movies on May 22 at The Grandin Theatre.  The Roanoke Star
  • MAKE Roanoke is a new nonprofit makerspace at 128 Albemarle Ave S.E. in downtown Roanoke where local creators can work with wood, metal, and fiber tools — and use advanced equipment like 3D printers and laser cutters to build new skills. More than 70 people attended its soft opening on April 5, and memberships start at $50 while classes and monthly community meetings are set to continue.  Roanoke.com
  • Davidsons, a Roanoke menswear shop that has been run by a family for over 100 years, will change ownership as current owner Larry Davidson sells it to James Bower from R. Coffee Ltd (a Lynchburg shop) in September. Bower will combine the shops online (so customers can shop at both) and plans to keep the store’s tradition of good service.  WSLS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • The Nelson County Sheriff's Office identified 22-year-old Katelynn Ann Hipes as the suspect in the murder of Kevin Scott Small, who was found dead with a gunshot wound outside a home in Shipman on Friday—officials noted she holds outstanding felony warrants and is not in the community.  ABC 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Local Energy Alliance Program and the City of Roanoke announced Solarize Virginia— a one-stop program to reduce the cost and complexity of switching to solar power. Homeowners can sign up for a free solar satellite assessment until July 15 as the program offers expert guidance and streamlined installation options.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials are proposing to raise the meals tax to 7% to bring in about $6 million to fund needs such as repairs and wage increases—some restaurant owners worry it will hurt their business. A public hearing on the proposal will be held today at 2 p.m. with a follow-up session at 7 p.m. in the city council chamber.  Cardinal News
  • Southwest Virginia communities must wait longer for FEMA funds to help with Hurricane Helene recovery as the Virginia Department of Emergency Management said new review procedures will delay payments.  WVTF
