COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three Virginia Tech graduates volunteered their veterinary services during the Walk for Peace, treating Aloka’s torn ligament (Ut Prosim) so the beloved companion could finish the journey. Aloka is now healthy and has returned home to Fort Worth.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Roanoke County Library has introduced StoryWalk to boost early literacy and promote outdoor family time. Families can enjoy interactive reading sessions + nature walks at the library’s new outdoor feature.  The Roanoke Times
  • Virginia Tech President Timothy Sands (serving since 2014) announced his plan to step down and will remain until a successor is chosen. He led the university through significant growth in enrollment and endowment.  WVTF
  • Botetourt County schools are asking for a 45 percent funding increase to modernize aging buildings and boost teacher pay amid a $16 million shortfall. The county budget subcommittee will present its revised plan on Tuesday, Apr. 28.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke City Public Schools permanently funded its Community Builders Program, ensuring ongoing support for community projects & student mentoring. The decision was announced on Apr. 9.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Spanberger signed bills yesterday to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by Jan. 1, 2028 and to fund workforce training programs in offshore wind, culinary arts and health care, officials said. The legislation aims to help Virginia workers manage living costs and to strengthen local businesses.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke City Council voted unanimously to allocate ($150,000) to preserve the historic caretaker's cottage, with plans expected to move forward soon.  Roanoke.com
