COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today the Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection opened its renovated free-roam cat room at its Roanoke shelter at 10 a.m. The updated space, funded by a $10,000 grant from Petco Love and help from Greater Good Charities, is designed to reduce stress for adoptable cats and ease their transition into new homes.  WSLS 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire destroyed the Noke Van. Co. building and its contents in Roanoke, and officials determined the incident was accidental — losses are estimated at $4.25 million.  Roanoke.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Roanoke County School Board is meeting today to review bullying policies after a fourth grader from Mountain View Elementary took her own life in late March amid bullying allegations. The Deputy Superintendent and the Director of School Counseling will explain how principals notify parents and the process for investigating bullying incidents.  WSLS 10
  • A Roanoke attorney representing 35 Covington Middle School families filed a lawsuit against Alleghany Highlands Public Schools after a carbon monoxide leak disrupted classes and made students sick. He seeks an injunction to close the school by the end of the school year—state leaders are being asked for support ahead of a hearing on April 23 in Alleghany County Circuit Court.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roanoke City Council is considering raising the local meals tax by 1.5 percent to bring in about 6 million dollars to bridge its budget gap. Some restaurant owners warn the tax—added on top of the regular sales tax—could hurt businesses still recovering from COVID.  WFXR-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Town of Buchanan is under a boil water notice after a water main break occurred on April 8; health officials urge residents to boil water or use bottled water for drinking, cooking, and making ice until repairs will be completed on Friday, April 11.  WFXR-TV
