COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three current and recent WDBJ7 broadcasters were honored at the 2024 Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters Awards (held at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs) over the weekend. Melissa Gaona, Isabella Ledonne and Alexander Powell each earned a second-place prize for their work on a human trafficking feature, local reporting from Blacksburg and a newscast on a major leadership shakeup in Roanoke.  WDBJ7
  • The Roanoke Parks Foundation began new trail construction this week on Mill Mountain to add over 4 miles of trail—a nearly 30% increase that introduces downhill mountain bike trails for the first time. The project, built by Black Diamond Designs and a full-time crew, is expected to be completed early this summer.  WSLS 10
  • Saint Francis Service Dogs opened registration for its fifth annual Spring Fundraiser Barks ‘n Rec on April 7—registration costs $25 and includes an event shirt, pet bandana and a chance to win prizes. The event will run from May 12 through 18 and lets participants join as individuals or groups to support people with disabilities statewide.  WFXR-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Roanoke’s Big Lots! store on Hershberger Road will reopen Thursday, April 10 after closing several weeks ago due to a bankruptcy protection filing — the reopening will be managed by Variety Wholesalers and will include more deals and a new apparel section.  WDBJ7
  • Authorities said the cause of the fire that destroyed Noke Van Co. in southeast Roanoke on Friday night is still under investigation, though early reports suggest it was most likely an electrical accident. The owners plan to rebuild by searching for a new location and have raised over $25,000 to support their 20 employees.  WSLS 10

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy reports that Roanoke gas prices increased by 7.4 cents per gallon last week, bringing the average price on April 7 to $2.95 while the cheapest station charged $2.76 on Sunday—prices are 13.8 cents higher than last month and 43.1 cents lower than a year ago.  WDBJ7

FINANCE NEWS

  • Bank on Roanoke Valley is hosting special events this week as part of Roanoke Valley Saves Week—an initiative that supports America Saves Week which began in 2007—to help residents build better savings habits. A coalition of local banks, nonprofits and governments is teaming up to provide free financial education programs.  WFIR News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs will begin their playoffs on Wednesday at 7:05 when they face the Ice Bears in Knoxville and will return to Roanoke on Friday for game two of a best-of-three series as they aim to reclaim the President’s Cup after last season’s loss — the team is focused on staying healthy and playing strong defense.  WDBJ7
