COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local ministry is contesting zoning violations that target its warming bus, outdoor lockers, and porta-potty used by unhoused residents. The ministry, operating since 2021, will work to align with city codes while keeping these essential services available.  WSLS 10
  • Four Roanoke-Fire EMS firefighters injured in a January house fire on the 2700 block of Courtland Road have fully recovered and returned to work today, according to the department statement.  WDBJ7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • UVA students in the Tadler program are helping towns grow by offering high-level consulting support to boost recovery after events like the 2024 flooding in Damascus — their work raises funds and updates local ordinances. The program will expand soon to serve more communities.  WVTF

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roanoke City Public Schools approved cuts of about 170 positions to close a $14-million funding gap at a March 24 meeting. The plan supports impacted workers with job placement resources and a recall list active for 15 months.  ABC 13
  • Local scholarship programs help Roanoke students cover extra costs in healthcare training as nonprofit leaders say that small funds can keep students enrolled amid a shortage of workers at local clinics (with 2,000 openings). Applications remain open until Tuesday, March 31.  WDBJ7

  • Roanoke-based nonprofit Lishy's Gift, founded by Andrea Guilliard in memory of her daughter (who lost her battle to rare leukemia after a 39-day hospital stay), now offers comfort to young adults beginning cancer treatment.  WFIR News
