ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Virginia State Police announced that Allen Leach II, 55 from Hampton, died on March 20 at 9:59 p.m. after his Dodge Ram pickup ran off Route 11 near Arch Mill Road in Botetourt County — he was not wearing a seatbelt.  WDBJ7

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies charged 34-year-old Joseph Lee Bray with attempted murder, abduction, and other crimes after a shooting occurred early Sunday on the 20,000 block of Botetourt Road in Eagle Rock where a woman trying to break up a domestic dispute was fired upon and everyone fled before deputies arrived with no injuries reported.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local playwright David Walton will open his play 'Closing Arguments' at Bear Theatre on April 4, which tells the story of a family dealing with a matriarch's death — the production mixes sadness and humor.  WFIR News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy's survey showed that Roanoke gas prices increased by 2.7 cents per gallon last week to an average of $2.82 on March 24—prices ranged from $2.64 to $2.99 per gallon—and remain 11.7 cents lower than a month ago and 58.2 cents lower than a year ago.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech board members will vote today on a proposal that raises tuition by 2.9%, increases fees by $186, and boosts room and board costs by 4.4%—a move that comes as students, faculty and staff voice concerns over rising costs and a blurry future. The board will also consider dissolving its inclusion office amid debates on spending for diversity and equity.  Roanoke.com
  • The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine held Match Day on March 21 at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke where the Class of 2025 opened their envelopes to learn their residency placements. All students matched, with five staying in Roanoke and seven completing residencies in Virginia — the remaining students placed in programs in 20 states — marking a proud milestone for the school.  The Roanoke Star

  • Roanoke County Fire and Rescue warned residents to avoid outdoor burning after weekend wildfires burned 160 acres near Equestrian Hills as crews built containment lines around homes. Officials say dry air and windy conditions could quickly raise the fire risk over the next few days.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roanoke City presented its recommended budget to City Council on March 24 at 2 p.m. amid concerns over cuts to school funding and street maintenance—officials explained revenue shortfalls forced deferrals of capital projects and announced community meetings and a public hearing in April with the final budget set for adoption on May 12.  WSLS 10
