COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Better Business Bureau previewed its upcoming Senior Day and Shred Event for seniors, which will be held later this week in downtown Roanoke — more details on time and location are expected soon.  WDBJ7
  • Darlene Lewis, founder of the Hope Center, plans to transform the gravel alley next to her building in Northwest into a community courtyard where residents can sit, eat and listen to music. The project is expected to finish before summer's end.  WDBJ7
  • Easterseals will host an inclusive summer camp for people of all abilities later this summer—registration opens soon.  WDBJ7
  • The Hope Center in northwest Roanoke is set to open a community courtyard soon—designed to offer locals a welcoming outdoor space. Officials say final touches are underway.  WDBJ7
  • DISH Network removed WDBJ7 nearly two weeks ago after a contract dispute, and customers can call 877-2-KEEPUS to help restore the local news channel as alternative providers continue offering its programming.  WDBJ7
  • Sinclair has partnered with Disabled American Veterans to support local veterans with free claims assistance, transportation to VA appointments, and job connections. The Sinclair Cares Community Impact Day runs until April 4 (servicing veterans across Central Virginia).  ABC 13

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Roanoke rose nearly 36¢ in the last week to $3.72 per gallon on Monday, according to GasBuddy's survey of 155 stations. Prices are now almost $1 higher than a month ago and $0.90 above last year's level — trends driven by rising global oil costs.  WDBJ7

  • Elementary students are learning about farming during Agriculture Literacy Week as volunteers read Farm Boots (a book that explains farm life and attire) at local schools from March 23 to 27. The event introduces children to different types of agriculture and the roles these farms play in everyday life.  WDBJ7

  • Clean Valley Council invites Roanoke area residents to join Earth Month events throughout April. The kickoff takes place Apr. 4 at Roanoke Mountain Adventures from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—later events include a recycling program on Apr. 16 and a street party on Apr. 18.  WFIR News

  • A Harvard study shows that teens who add 30 minutes of exercise or sleep daily can lower type 2 diabetes risk by reducing insulin resistance by 15%. The research adds to evidence linking sedentary habits with poorer health outcomes.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke's flu season shows moderate hospital visits for influenza and RSV, and Johns Hopkins data reveal a shift from influenza A to influenza B — state models predict flu levels will decline in coming weeks as overall virus spread slows.  WSLS 10
