ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Roanoke County Fire & Rescue reported that crews battled a brush fire along Catawba Valley Drive that burned about 83 acres and was 60% contained by 1:30 p.m. Saturday—officials said crews had planned to reach full containment on Sunday and no homes or residents were threatened. ABC 13
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A domestic dispute in Botetourt escalated early Sunday when a man fired two shots during a family confrontation and no one was injured — 34-year-old Joseph Lee Bray faces multiple charges and remains at large. WSLS 10
- ➤ The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible shooting on the 20,000 block of Botetourt Road in Eagle Rock—reports say a man fired shots at individuals Sunday morning. WSLS 10
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The local film Triumph of Hope returns for a second screening at the Grandin Theatre on April 2—$15 tickets are still available so residents can see firsthand the story of three Western Virginia children who survived the Holocaust; the extra showing comes after many missed the sold-out event last fall. The Roanoke Times
- ➤ The Texas Hippie Coalition will perform at Dr. Pepper Park in Roanoke on October 18—part of the Northwest ACE Summer Concert Series, and fans can expect a lively metal concert later this fall. WSLS 10
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A Vinton middle school student, Rory Grant from William Byrd Middle School, won the Radford University Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on March 22 — he beat 26 other students in 13 rounds — and he will go on to compete in the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee from May 27 to May 29 near Washington, D.C. - ➤ Roanoke County Public Schools hosted its 12th annual Backpack Run where participants ran a 5k or 10k to raise funds for teacher grants and senior scholarships from the Education Foundation. The foundation has awarded more than $1.6 million since 1991. WSLS 10
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Sunday, dozens gathered at Williamson Road in Roanoke to protest plans to privatize the United States Postal Service. The protest was led by the National Association of Letter Carriers—who warned that privatization could cut jobs and reduce mail service reliability. WSLS 10
- ➤ Today, the Roanoke City Council will review the proposed budget for the new fiscal year at 2 p.m. in the city council chamber on the fourth floor of the Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building—City Manager Valmarie Turner said the plan calls for raising employee pay and fixing building maintenance even as school division advocates had asked for full funding, a level budget that would mean $7 million less for the schools.
