- ➤ Supervisor Edgar Tuck urged the board to delay closing Stewartsville Elementary by one year so families can better prepare for student transitions (he noted that the current plan leaves little time before the new school year begins). ABC 13
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Roanoke taxpayers are warned today about AI-driven scams that mimic tax resolution services and pressure recipients to share sensitive information. The IRS advises residents to ignore suspicious calls and verify urgent tax messages (using official channels) before taking any action. WSLS 10
- ➤ The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has opened applications for its Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Infrastructure Grant program, accepting projects that support local food production + forestry which benefit the community until April 30. Eligible political subdivisions can request up to $50,000. WSLS 10
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ New cholesterol guidelines now recommend that everyone get an Lp(a) check once and that children aged 9 to 11 be retested at 19; doctors say catching high cholesterol early can prevent serious heart issues. WSLS 10
- ➤ Virginia Tech researcher Carol Bovo said menthol flavoring add-ons let sellers and buyers bypass bans on menthol cigarettes—she noted these products lower cigarette harshness and may encourage increased smoking.
