COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Roanoke will host a ribbon cutting for the Wasena Skatepark and Pump Track at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Mar. 13 at Wasena Park (1001 Winchester Ave) where the 24,000 sqft facility will offer street-style ramps for skaters of all abilities.  The Roanoke Star
  • Mason Roofing Company (Wirtz) reviews nominations of veterans needing a new roof and offers a free makeover to help with costly home repairs. Owner Marc Mason continues the two-year program as many veterans face financial hurdles in maintaining their homes.  WFIR News
  • Crews are setting up the in-river kayak park by placing white bags in the river to build a temporary copper dam for a whitewater feature. The project, costing about $6 million, will have part of the river feature ready by June with equipment working through spring.  WSLS 10
  • Korean War veteran Marvin Silvester Patton, missing since July 5, 1950, was escorted with full military honors (from Fort Lee) from Grubb Funeral Home to the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin.  ABC 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters responded at 2:39 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 9 to a brush fire visible from 581 between the Wonju and Electric Road exit ramps (possibly sparked by a train) and reported no traffic impact.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jennifer Torrence fulfills her lifelong dream by teaching ag and leading the FFA program at Franklin County High School where she inspires students to explore agriculture beyond animal care (bringing in lessons on science and leadership).  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke City Public Schools face a $16 million shortfall and may cut jobs, deferred maintenance, special programs and preschool to protect classrooms — the board will meet today at 6:30 p.m. to decide on the proposal.  WDBJ7
  • Fralin Biomedical Research Institute hosted its annual Brain School event on Monday, March 9 at 4 Riverside Circle in Roanoke where local families enjoyed hands-on exhibits, tastings, and talks on gene-driven brain development (one speaker discussed a rare epileptic seizure condition). Admission and parking were free.  WDBJ7
  • Franklin County school leaders are asking county officials for an extra $8.9M to fund staff raises, used buses, textbooks, and capital improvements from a $100.4M budget. The proposal will be presented next Tuesday (for review) and aims to cover a budget gap caused by an accounting error.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia Tech researchers discovered that a highly sensitive DNA test can predict relapse risk in acute myeloid leukemia patients after transplant. They will continue this study at 18 cancer centers plus results are expected later this year.  The Roanoke Star
  • Health officials confirmed a raccoon in NW Roanoke has rabies and advise residents to avoid contact with wild animals until further notice.  WDBJ7
