ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Roanoke County Fire & Rescue responded at 3:04 p.m. to a residential fire on the 2800 block of Loch Haven Drive in Hollins + firefighters controlled the blaze in about 30 minutes with no injuries reported, though four people and two dogs were displaced.  ABC 13

  • Interstate Group invested $8.9 million to expand its Giles County facility—creating 46 jobs and adding automation, new machinery, and upgrades to boost trailer availability on the East Coast. A $200,000 state grant supports the project, according to the governor’s office.  Cardinal News
  • Speyside Bourbon Cooperage in Smyth County will end production and lay off 52 employees effective April 23 after citing bourbon industry slowdowns in a letter sent Feb. 23; county officials say they are working with regional partners to support affected workers.  Cardinal News

  • The City of Salem is hosting a second job fair for impacted Yokohama Tire employees and local job seekers at the Salem Civic Center on Thursday, March 5 (2:30 to 5:30 p.m.). Seventy-three companies will guide attendees to job opportunities and offer resume and re-skilling help.  WDBJ7

  • Grandin Court PTA will hold an emergency meeting at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Grandin Court Elementary. The meeting will discuss proposed school budget cuts due to a $16.5 million shortfall from recent funding changes — parents and staff can ask questions.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Senate approved a bill (21-19 party-line vote) to remove three Confederate statues from Capitol Square, leaving empty pedestals for commemorative replacements. Officials are now seeking public input to honor figures like former Gov. Holton and Booker T. Washington.  Cardinal News

  • Women with multiple sclerosis may face compounded symptoms during menopause, and doctors say it is key to tell them apart — patients should consult both an OB-GYN and a neurologist for proper treatment.  WDBJ7
