ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • One dog and three cats remain missing after a rescue transport van crashed on I-81 near the Wildwood Road exit in Salem this past weekend — authorities say all animals are microchipped and ask locals to contact 540-840-7182 if they spot them.  WSLS 10

  • Roanoke artist Laquisha Moore has her song 'Wipe It Up' featured on the Netflix animated series My Dad the Bounty Hunter — the track plays during the ending credits of episode six in season two, boosting her local profile to national audiences.  The Roanoke Tribune

  • GasBuddy’s survey shows Roanoke gas prices increased by 3.7 cents last week, reaching an average of $2.78 per gallon on Monday — with prices ranging from $2.49 to $3.09 per gallon.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roanoke City Public Schools received a $450K grant from VDEM to build a solar-powered microgrid with battery storage at Patrick Henry & William Fleming High Schools.   • The Wasena Bridge Replacement Project is around 80% complete and is expected to finish this summer, as project manager Josephus Johnson-Koroma said crews will install the final steel tub girder next month + connecting Wasena with Old Southwest neighborhoods.  WSLS 10
  • City of Roanoke extended its Williamson Road survey deadline to today and invites residents to share feedback on a new center turn lane plus reduced travel lanes along the stretch from Pocahontas to Angell — the project began last fall to slow traffic and reduce crashes.  WSLS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • WDBJ7+ launched a new Hometown Health Stories special that covers issues like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, along with updates on spring allergies and hospice closures in the area.  WDBJ7
  • Q-99 is hosting its 23rd Annual Dick and Dave’s Miracle Day Radiothon this Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to raise funds for Carilion Children’s Hospital, where every donation supports lifesaving treatment for local kids + families.  WSLS 10
  • UVA researchers are studying why colorectal cancer is rising among young adults—especially in southwest Virginia. They note that unhealthy diets, lack of sleep and possible pollutants may be key factors, and they advise early screening after the recommended age dropped to 45.  WVTF
  • A study (published in Circulation) projects that 6 in 10 women will face cardiovascular disease by 2050, spurred by rising obesity and high blood pressure, while nearly one-third of adolescents are at risk for diabetes.
