ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Consumer Sentiment survey from Roanoke College found Virginians feel upbeat about the US economy, which is expected to grow over 3% in the first quarter. The survey of 930 respondents—completed mid-February—also shows wage growth outpaced inflation by 1.3% and a third expect better finances next year.  WFIR News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roanoke City Public Schools announced a $2.55 million solar-powered microgrid at William Fleming and Patrick Henry high schools to provide emergency power backup & help cut energy bills. The project will be completed by the end of 2026 using a grant with matching investment from Secure Solar Futures.  WDBJ7
  • A new solar project will help local schools cut energy costs by installing panels on their roofs, saving money on operating expenses. The initiative, announced on Feb. 27, will boost sustainability across school sites.  WDBJ7

  • A Blue Hills resident reported that illegal dumping near a construction site on Orange Avenue has been ongoing for months, risking contamination of nearby wells+ urging the developer to block access+ as the city monitors the issue.  WSLS 10

  • Virginia lawmakers debated bills on rules for PFAS (forever chemicals) in menstrual products and cosmetics. The House passed both measures and the Senate is set to consider them, aiming to ensure clear labeling and ban 12 harmful ingredients that pose health risks.  WVTF

HEALTH NEWS

  • CDC data shows 1,136 measles cases have been reported in the first two months of 2026, with nearly 90% linked to outbreak clusters. Roanoke health providers emphasize vaccination as the best defense against severe complications such as pneumonia (a common cause for hospitalization).  ABC 13
