COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roanoke residents urged city council on Tuesday to protect the historic Caretaker’s Cottage at Washington Park—a beloved symbol of Black heritage. Council member Phazhon Nash said no formal decision has been made as options are being evaluated amid community calls for preservation.  WSLS 10
  • K92’s ‘Say Yes to the Prom Dress’ returns for its third year at Berglund Hall at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28. The free event offers $10 prom dresses & accepts gently used donations at designated drop-off spots.  WSLS 10
  • A local focus group met Friday, Feb. 20 in Roanoke to discuss ideas for a revitalized entertainment district. Community leaders may use the feedback to guide future development plans.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Roanoke native Dr. Beth Brown broke barriers by becoming the first Black woman with a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Michigan + her legacy lives on through scholarships and dedicated spaces at local schools and the university.   • Mill Mountain Theatre will stage 9 to 5 The Musical, offering a fresh take on the classic production. The show will run soon and ticket details will be announced.  WDBJ7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Salem-based Yokohama Tire plant will close on March 18 — impacting over 400 employees after nearly 60 years as local officials work to support job seekers and plan the site’s future. A second job fair is set for March 5 at the Salem Civic Center.  WDBJ7
  • Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge Fall campaign ran in late 2025 and attracted record visitor numbers while hotel revenue increased by almost 7 percent and room sales nearly 5 percent. Regional partners met yesterday — highlighting that shared funding and cooperation continue to boost tourism.  WFIR News

  • Local lawmakers are working on measures to help independent pharmacies stay open + provide essential care for residents. The proposal will be reviewed in upcoming sessions to support community health.  WDBJ7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Sarah Nosal said two measles vaccine doses are 97% effective but about 3% of fully vaccinated people may still get the virus, though with milder symptoms. Nearly 910 cases in 2026 are mostly among unvaccinated persons, and health officials urge parents to follow the recommended MMR schedule.  WDBJ7

  • The NCAA posthumously honored local coach Charlene Curtis with the Gerald R. Ford Award for her pioneering leadership in women’s basketball.
