COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roanoke County farm owner Jared Frye (of C&F Farms) pre-stages hay to create safe footing and clears water troughs to keep his cattle comfortable during winter storms; the farm will continue hay staging as snow melts to ease muddy fields.  WDBJ7
  • Local groups partnered to fund RADAR Bus Services that will connect homeless residents with food, shelter + vital support across the city. The initiative was announced yesterday and will expand services in the coming weeks.  WDBJ7
  • Local agencies reported yesterday that the foster care system was stretched thin due to a shortage of foster families, prompting urgent community appeals. Officials will soon launch outreach programs+ to help recruit new foster parents.  WDBJ7

  • Oasis World Market in Southwest is busy as shoppers gather ingredients for Lunar New Year celebrations. Several local events are set for Feb. 17, 20, and 21 at sites including Virginia Tech, Radford University, Taubman Museum, & Mountain Lake Lodge.  WSLS 10

  • Gas prices in Roanoke rose 6.3 cents to an average of $2.79 per gallon on Monday, Feb. 16, as GasBuddy reported from 155 stations in the area. The national average increased 2.6 cents to $2.87, reflecting modest regional shifts ahead of further supply changes.  WDBJ7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Virginia’s first wind farm is under construction in Botetourt County on North Mountain. The 13-turbine project, set to be operational by year’s end, has raised local concerns over noise, wildlife, and views (particularly for B&B owners), while also promising road upgrades and $20 million in county tax revenue.  WDBJ7

  • Gov. Spanberger announced grants from the Virginia Brownfields Restoration & Economic Redevelopment Assistance Fund to SW Virginia communities to clean up contaminated sites.   • Researchers from Virginia Tech + ASU are studying honeybee brain signals today to uncover patterns of neurotransmitter activity that may explain rapid learning and human decision-making, with potential clues for understanding depression and attention disorders.
