COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local events calendar aggregates over 30 listings for live music, theater, wellness, and nightlife from today through Feb. 18 — offering locals a wide range of outings. Organizers advise checking with venues for any last minute changes.  The Roanoke Rambler
  • Renewal by Andersen of Roanoke donated new, energy-efficient windows to replace aging ones in the Ronald McDonald House common areas — helping the facility support families whose children are cared for at Carilion Children’s Hospital.  WDBJ7
  • Mill Mountain Zoo updated viewers on upcoming events when Kiana Nowall appeared on 7@four today. The zoo’s 'Name a Bug After Your Ex' contest runs until Feb. 14, and summer camp registration for ages 6-15 is open for camps in June + July.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Roanoke's Showtimers Community Theatre presents 'The Shark is Broken,' a play about delays and behind-the-scenes struggles during the filming of a classic movie. The production runs Feb. 26 through Mar. 8 at the theatre, offering audiences a close-up look at cinematic history.  WVTF

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roanoke City Public Schools met Tuesday to discuss a new funding formula that may force budget cuts such as reduced transportation and delayed maintenance; Superintendent Dr. Verletta White warned that these changes could affect student progress as the preliminary budget is due March 10 (details are pending).  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke City Public Schools faces a $16.5 million deficit from tax revenue changes, with potential cuts to after school bus service plus tutoring programs. The school board will meet tonight at 6:30 p.m. to explore funding alternatives to support student services.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Google's planned data center campus in Botetourt County will use up to 8 million gallons of water per day and may increase county water infrastructure costs to over $300M (with the county paying $100M upfront) as officials assess its impact on rural water resources.  WSLS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Angels of Assisi held a ribbon cutting on Tuesday to install new equipment including more surgery tables, exam rooms, an x+ray machine for surgery support, and the only CT machine in Roanoke. The facility aims to improve care for the community.  WSLS 10
