- ➤ At Salem City Council tonight, community members voiced concern over Roanoke College's plan to demolish a historic house on Market and Clay, believed to be built before the Civil War; the college board approved demolition and sent the application to the city for review. WDBJ7
- ➤ Mount Zion AME Church celebrates Doris Dillard’s 99th birthday on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 10:00 a.m. in its sanctuary—honoring her decades of service including founding a food pantry that now serves over 200 people monthly; Mayor Joe Cobb will present a formal proclamation and Voices of Zion will perform. - ➤ Roanoke leaders plan to transform Berglund Center into an Entertainment District with a casino, restaurants, hotel, parking deck, and community spaces; the project awaits General Assembly approval and a local referendum while a private investor commits $300 million to add over 900 jobs with salaries of $55,000–$60,000. - ➤ The Rescue Mission of Roanoke launched RIDE, a 24/7 shuttle service that began in December and carries about 82 homeless individuals between its shelter and the RAM House Day Shelter. - ➤ Grandin Theatre is hosting free screenings of historic films for Black History Month to honor trailblazer Oscar Micheaux. - ➤ Walter Smith III led a trio at the Jefferson Center Jazz Club, performing recently; Hamton native bassist William Ledbetter & veteran drummer Kobie Watkins delivered a set inspired by Coltrane and paid tribute to Carla Bley's haunting ballad Lawns in a memorable local show. The Roanoke Tribune
- ➤ Roanoke celebrates 100 years of Black History with a series of local events this month. Community members can join free AARP-sponsored guided tours at the Harrison Museum, attend Gainsboro lectures, and enjoy the TAP Black History Celebration at St. John's Episcopal Church on Feb. 12. - ➤ GasBuddy’s survey revealed that Roanoke’s prices fell 1.9 cents per gallon to $2.72 on Monday, Feb. 9, 2026 — a modest drop from 7.6 cents higher last month and 26.9 cents lower than a year ago. WDBJ7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Seven of the 24 Roanoke City Public Schools now have Black principals noted for raising learning standards and safety. Leaders from schools including Lucy Addison Middle, Lincoln Terrace Elementary, Westside Elementary, Fairview Elementary, Noel C. Taylor, Roanoke Academy and William Fleming High — a sign of growing local educational commitment. The Roanoke Tribune
- ➤ Jim and Augustine Smith have pledged a $20 million gift (Virginia Tech's largest scholarship endowment) to fund in-state scholarships that will help local students become doctors in Roanoke. The donation is set to lower debt and boost retention of graduates to practice in western Virginia. WVTF
- ➤ Students in 4-H and FFA will exhibit agriculture projects at the Botetourt County Youth Ag Expo Friday, Feb. 13 at Lord Botetourt High School from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event features animal displays, a talent show & silent auction to mark the 100th anniversary of Virginia FFA. WDBJ7

- ➤ Virginia Tech researchers are testing an 8-week study that sends daily app prompts urging smokers to think about future health benefits (including nicotine patches as part of treatment) to help them quit. Recruitment of 128 current smokers will begin in April. WVTF
