COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roanoke shelters are expanding services to help keep residents warm as winter weather intensifies. Officials (who manage the shelters) say extra support will be available soon to meet rising demand.  WDBJ7
  • The Rescue Mission shelter has operated nonstop since snow began Saturday night — serving over 300 guests and partnering with local nonprofits and the city to deliver warm meals and safe shelter — while planning to extend its services on Monday if needed.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke leaders honored local heroes in a ceremony held Monday, Jan. 26 in the city. The event recognized residents for brave actions that helped keep the community safe — a tribute to local spirit.  WDBJ7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Roanoke residents continue to face icy roads and stalled vehicles after heavy snow; city officials said neighborhood roads & sidewalks will be cleared today after main streets were prioritized.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • VDOT contractors are working 12-hour shifts on secondary streets in residential areas while bare pavement will not be provided until temperatures rise. Motorists are advised to delay travel and check 511 services for updates (VDOT crews work around the clock).  Roanoke County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local fitness centers noted rising demand for tailored workout programs for older adults and are planning to add more classes in the coming weeks to help seniors stay active.  WDBJ7
  • Cold air may tighten airway muscles and make breathing harder, especially for those with asthma, as health experts from Cleveland Clinic suggest following treatment plans and limiting exposure. They also warn that icy sidewalks may affect mental health in vulnerable groups & recommend indoor exercise and caution when walking outside.  WDBJ7
  • A Virginia Tech assistant professor is testing a new mobile app study using episodic future thinking to help smokers quit—asking participants to imagine positive future events to reduce cravings. Funded by a National Cancer Institute grant, the study recruits rural and urban residents and may shape future public health efforts.  WFIR News
