COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CYP at St. John's today welcomes Mia Sappingfield as its new Executive Director. She brings nonprofit leadership experience + strategic fundraising skills from the West End Center for Youth and plans to expand services at 1 Mountain Ave in SW.  The Roanoke Tribune
  • Mrs. Dorsey's Closet opens a new facility (behind Wendy's at 2121 Apperson Drive) to offer quality clothing and support to families in need. The nonprofit, led by Edie Saunders, continues its mission of compassion that began in 1983.  The Roanoke Tribune
  • Severe winter weather led many churches to cancel services, but WZBJ24 will air two services today: a 9 a.m. mass from Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church and a 10 a.m. community service from Eastlake Community Church.  WDBJ7
  • On Jan. 17, the local SCLC chapter held its 29th annual MLK luncheon at the Shenandoah Club where over 175 guests gathered. Keynote speaker Professor Dennis C. CULTURE NEWS

  • The first Story Keepers’ Studio reading took place last Thursday at the Harrison Museum of African American Culture on Melrose Avenue, where six performers read Addae Moon's play 'She Calls Up the Sun.' The next show on Feb. 28 (7 to 9 p.m.) will present James Baldwin's play 'Blues for Mister Charlie' that looks at fairness in America.  The Roanoke Tribune
  • A 14-foot monument honoring 70 Black Union soldiers was unveiled Sunday, Jan. 18 outside First Baptist Church in Rocky Mount. Franklin County NAACP and local supporters brought hundreds together for the ceremony, funded by the Mellon Foundation & Virginia Tech’s Monuments Across Appalachian Virginia initiative.  The Roanoke Tribune

  • Local energy companies and shelters are preparing for dangerous cold as a winter storm moves through the region today. Officials report that Carilion Clinic and local partners are on alert to help residents if needed.  WDBJ7

  • Mayor Joe Cobb launched The Cobb Collective for monthly book talks at local libraries. The series started with a Jan. 21 event at Main Library (with free lunch and a take-one, leave-one book share) and will continue at Belmont on Feb. 11, Williamson Road on Mar. 7, and Raleigh Court on Apr. 14.  The Roanoke Tribune
  • The City of Roanoke announced that free parking in all PARK garages began Saturday & will continue until normal operations resume amid severe winter weather, while residents are urged to opt for off-street lots to aid snowplows.  WSLS 10
