  • Appalachian Power says customers should update contact details and report outages this weekend as a winter storm may drop heavy ice that could bring down power lines. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • With winter weather ahead, officials remind residents to reserve 911 for emergencies and report power, water, gas and road issues through local agencies (contact VDOT, AEP, or the water provider for details).  Roanoke County
  • Roanoke County trash collection will run on a one-day delay next week (Jan. 26–30) because of hazardous road conditions; staff will assess roads Monday to decide if additional delays are needed and residents are asked to put out containers only the evening before pickup while keeping recyclables indoors.  Roanoke County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts warn that the incoming winter storm may cause frostbite by exposing skin to freezing temperatures, with symptoms starting as tingling and numbness and progressing to pain and blistering. Dr. Thomas Waters of Cleveland Clinic advises limiting outdoor time and warming affected areas with warm (not hot) water to prevent further injury.  WDBJ7
