  • Star City Cat Fanciers will hold its annual cat show on Jan. 24 and 25 at the Holiday Inn in Valley View. The event will feature competitions for pedigreed cats and household pets and include vendors for cat supplies.  WSLS 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Franklin County residents & the local NAACP unveiled a monument honoring 70 Black Union soldiers at Rocky Mount last Sunday. The new memorial, backed by a $285,000 Mellon grant and Virginia Tech support, joins fewer than 25 national memorials honoring the U.S. Colored Troops.  WVTF

  • Roanoke is pushing a casino proposal despite strong local legislative opposition — officials plan to seek General Assembly approval while relying on informal market assessments, a move that could challenge casinos in Danville, Bristol and Petersburg.  Cardinal News
